Staying fit so you can sit and knit

Lately I've been thinking a lot about health and happiness and how the two work together. I know it sounds kind of deep but I think we all need a balance of both. If you are too focused on being fit maybe you don't take enough time to relax and enjoy life. Or maybe you sit down at the end of each day to knit for hours because it makes you happy but then you don't feel so great and neither do your joints.

This happened to me over the summer. I got a bad injury while exercising and I had to stop everything. I couldn't workout, I couldn't really knit, couldn't cook for myself, lots of couldn'ts that made me feel upended and out of sorts.

After a few days I could knit again and so I dove headfirst into knitting. I knit until my fingers hurt! It was the only way I could find some sort of relaxation and start to feel like myself again. But then I lost the balance of fitness as part of my life and my body got achey, I was tired all the time, I was getting upset at silly things. Do you get like that? Ugh! 

So one evening I set my alarm to get up early and go for a walk. Before I went to bed I got my workout clothes ready like I did when I was going to the gym. I set my alarm and decided that even though I wasn't headed to that 6:30 am yoga class anymore, my health was worth the early alarm clock and I had to pretend like a class was still calling my name. 

I started small with just a 1 mile loop around my neighborhood. I was out of breath but I didn't care! My other injury was starting to feel better and I was happier and less tired later in the day. I've been doing this walk 4 times a week now for a couple of weeks and it gets a little longer or a little faster each day.

It really has me thinking about the benefits of being healthy and how that helps you be happy. Knitting and creativity give me a certain amount of happiness and when my body feels good it helps my brain to work better and be more involved in my creativity. Have you found something like this in your life?
