News at Ewe Ewe: Thank you!

What I’m cooking: Chicken and Leek Pasta

Do you have those days where you don’t want to go to the grocery store but you have no idea what to make with what you have?

This was one of those “google what’s in my fridge” recipes and it was so tasty it’s one I plan to make again! The leeks were sweet and creamy but the mustard gave the whole thing just the right balance.

It also hit my favorite points of using ingredients I normally have on hand and being easy to throw together at the end of a long work day.

What inspired me: Collage Creative podcast

As a small business owner I pretty much think about small business 24/7. I love knitting and all things fiber but sometimes I think that geeking out on small business might be my real hobby. I even had serious conversations this week with two friends about starting their own small businesses!

On the Collage Creative podcast Amy Small interviews creative business owners and dives into how and why they opened up shop. It’s so inspiring listening to how Julie Weisenberger got started with Cocoknits or how Erin Barrett created her perfectly Instagram-worthy weaving business called Sunwoven Studios.

If you’re into the stories behind creative small businesses like I am then the Collage Creative podcast is a must. You can even listen to my episode where I tell Amy that SHE was the one that inspired me to start this small business, Ewe Ewe Yarns!

What’s coming up: Quick beanie?

Do you have a tried-and-true hat that you always turn to? I had this blue beanie that I knit about 15 years ago as a shop sample that I always just grabbed when I went out on a cool morning.

This was hat on Saturday morning. By Saturday evening the blue beanie was slightly chewed and completely ruined with tufts of yarn spread around the house.

I guess my new pup Kuma decided I needed a fresh hat for our walks!

I wanted a new hat quickly since the mornings are pretty chilly now that it’s October. I grabbed a skein of Baa Baa Bulky, pulled a strand from each end and rewound it so the yarn was held double.

I whipped up this cute Berry beanie in a few short minutes and I love it! You might have seen my Instagram story about it on Sunday.

I took it for a test walk this morning and it’s much softer and not scratchy like the blue beanie was so that’s a huge bonus! I think I might whip it up in a few colors with some odds and ends that I have around the studio.

Would you like a free pattern for this quick crochet hat? It worked up in about a half an hour!

I hope you have had a creative week. Leave me a comment to let me know what you’ve been up to!

Meet the Wärme Mitts Knitting Pattern

Wärme Mitts are a funky-cool set of log cabin wrist warmers. These little mitts work up in no time and they’re a ton of fun for using colors you love.

These fingerless gloves are a great introduction to the log cabin style of knitting! Each mitt starts with a small center panel and is worked back and forth. The project is then rotated clockwise and new stitches are picked up to create each adjoining panel.

They’re fun to make and I love how the colors play off of each other. The Warme Mitts use 4 colors of Ewe Ewe Wooly Worsted merino wool yarn and we were luck enough to have Vickie curate some yarn kit color combinations just for us!

Take a look at these awesome yarn packs. I can’t decide if I want another set in Hyper Hues or Wärme Tones!

I hope you enjoy my knitting pattern inside The Knit Vibe along with the entire book. There’s even more that I haven’t mentioned like interviews with Kaffe Fasset, Caitlin Hunter and Bristol Ivy along with projects from designers like Nancy Marchant, Tanis Gray and my friend, Amy Small.

It really is as good as it sounds!

News at Ewe Ewe: Pop Top!

If you saw my email on Friday you might have caught my new design called Pop Top. This is the first sweater I have designed in many years and I’m very happy with how it turned out!

We launched it in 9 sizes thanks to the help of my amazing technical editor, friend and photographer, Meaghan Schmaltz. I think this is one of the best and most poured over patterns on the Ewe Ewe line.

Pop Top is a great basic sweater that can be dressed up or worn daily like a reliable sweatshirt. Knit in Baa Baa Bulky merino wool yarn it can be washed, loved and just gets better with time.

I’m about to cast on another one in Indigo. My friend Midori said she wants one in Brushed Silver. What color will you choose?!

Mushroom Soup with Bacon by Anne Burrell

Mushroom Soup with Bacon by Anne Burrell

What I’m cooking: Mushroom Soup with Bacon

The weather has definitely turned to fall here in San Diego. The days are still warm but the nights are chilly and that has me cooking soup again.

My husband loves cream of mushroom soup and when searching for a new recipe I found this one with bacon. We all know everything’s better with bacon and this was no exception!

This recipe came together easily and used ingredients I had on hand. That makes it a win and one I’d make again and again!

How I’m dressing: What to Wear in 60 Degree Weather

The change of seasons always confuses me about what to wear. I don't look at a lot of my fall clothes during the other months so I kinda forget what I need to wear and even what I have!

To realign my wardrobe for the cooler weather, I found this blog post on Shopping on Champagne about what to wear in 60 degree weather — which is most of my life here in San Diego!

I think it’s all about transitioning from shorts and flip flops to jeans and cute shoes. Add a pair of earrings, a good leather tote and instead of a blazer I’ll be choosing my favorite hand-knit sweater for layering. Probably my new Foxtrot Cardigan!

There are chapters with everything from bringing creativity into your daily life to stories about makers, knitting and crochet patterns (including the Wärme Mitts log cabin wrist warmers designed by me!) and of course and amazing tutorials section because Vickie is a master at teaching her craft!

We’re having Vickie as a guest on our blog on Wednesday so stay tuned!

Free Pattern Friday: Night Surfer crochet hat

Night Surfer FREE crochet beanie pattern

Night Surfer FREE crochet beanie pattern

Inspired by a cool San Diego beach, Night Surfer is meant to keep you warm on your morning surf check. The colors fade from sand to sea and up into a starry night sky.

The beanie is worked from the bottom up and is mostly single crochet. The soft rolled brim adds a little extra length to cover your ears.

FREE crochet pattern: Night Surfer beanie in Ewe So Sporty yarn from Ewe Ewe Yarns

Sized for the whole family, Night Surfer can be made for the tiniest surf grommet to grandpa on his longboard.

The twinkling night sky is made using stranded crochet (often called tapestry crochet) and is explained in the pattern. Choose your favorite beachy colors to make the hat or just whip it up in one color.

In my original hat, I used Wheat for the sand, Sky Blue for the waves, Midnight Blue for the sky and Citrus Pop for the stars.

I also thought it would look pretty in a dreamy white sand beach color palette with Vanilla, Aquamarine, Teal and Lemon Chiffon. So tropical!

Great to see friends! Two San Diego Yarn Crawl events

This past weekend I was at two different yarn shops here in San Diego. On Thursday I spent the day at Yarning for You where we released this beachy free crochet hat pattern.

On Saturday I spent the day at Apricot Yarn & Supply and chatted all things yarn and knitting. We had a ton of fun choosing colors for the new Prickly and Shade Shifter hats along with tons of other projects that knitters had in mind.

It’s always great to catch up with my local knitters and see what people are working on!

New to me: Get to Work Book

As a small business owner I am responsible for so many things here at Ewe Ewe Yarns. I do everything from choosing the yarns, designing patterns, shipping product and even all of the accounting. I am constantly on the lookout for a planner to help me keep it all straight and I think I’ve finally found one!

I just bought the Get to Work Book and I love its clean lines and ample room for writing. It has a nice section at the top of each day that encourages me to choose the three most important tasks which has really been helping me get things done on the date they need doing.

Do you have a favorite planner or notebook?

Knitting tip: How to knit jog-less stripes when knitting in the round

Do you hate it when it looks like your knitted stripes don’t line up perfectly? Um, ME TOO.

I just cast on a new pair of Pepperwood Mitts because I want to be prepared when the weather changes since I’ve been taking my new dog on long morning walks. I hate having cold hands! But anyway, I looked up this technique because the Pepperwood Mitts are the perfect project to put it to use so your stripes are always as perfect as they should be.

What I’m working on: Counting 9 pallets of yarn!

Phew. Last week was a long week. Before heading out for yarn crawl, I received my fall shipment full of delicious and fresh dye lots of Ewe So Sporty, Wooly Worsted and Baa Baa Bulky yarns.

I’ve been sorting boxes, counting inventory and all around moving heavy things. But I love getting the shipment. There’s nothing quite like the hope of new yarn, think of all the projects we can make!

This big delivery means we’re back to stock on all of our colors so if you’ve been waiting for some Ewe So Sporty in Vanilla now is the time to grab some.

It’s a lot to check in all of this yarn but we do it every year and it’s so worth it. I love the crazy cycle of small business life. If you can’t find me for the next few days, check under the pile of cardboard in the corner… 😆

I hope you have had a creative week. Leave me a comment to let me know what you’ve been up to!
