Fun event: Visiting The Twisted Skein

This weekend I went on a little California adventure up past Los Angeles to Bakersfield. I had never been to this part of the state before but I’m so happy that I went because I had a blast!

On Saturday I was lucky enough to do a super fun event at The Twisted Skein. Ron and his team rolled out the welcome wagon like no other store has ever done! They had 3 huge tables covered in Ewe Ewe yarn with garments and ideas galore.

I had a great time chatting yarn, looking through patterns and planning new projects with lots and lots of knitters! If you’re ever near Bakersfield make sure you stop by this awesome yarn shop and be sure to pick up a skein of Ewe Ewe while you’re there!

Keeping it creative: How to Draw Cute Dogs

Since adopting a new dog I’ve become obsessed with all things puppy all over again! I came across this blog post about how to create adorable doggy doodles when you need a moment of creativity.

Running my own business means I always have a planner at hand. Rather than just filling those pages with endless tasks and to-dos it’s fun to stop and doodle for a few minutes.

Having some prompts about what to draw is a great way to unlock a little part of your brain you didn’t know you had, plus when I look back through my planner I can find a page to smile about!

Thomas, Heather and Kuma

Thomas, Heather and Kuma

New to love: We got a dog!

Thomas and I adopted a new dog! We welcomed Kuma, a three year old Belgian Malinois into our family. She came to us from a great local rescue group and I think we’re all happy to have found each other.

She’s making herself at home by figuring where to store her toys and what time we go for walks. This morning I found her watching me to open my eyes so we could wake up for the day!

Our previous dog passed away about nine months ago at the age of 15 so we’re happy to have a sprightly young pup adding some silliness to our home!

Use a yoga mat to block large knitting projects

Use a yoga mat to block large knitting projects

Around the web: Use a yoga mat to block large knitting and crochet projects

I mentioned to my sister that I don’t have blocking mats and I really need to invest in some after all these years. A minute later she sends back this great blog post about blocking larger knits on a yoga mat. (She also made the snarky comment that she knows I have a few unused mats but we’ll let that slide 😜).

Anyway, this post has some good tips about blocking knitting and crochet projects especially shawls with a large wingspan. It’s a good alternative to using towels and I’m definitely going to try it out!

Espresso Martini

Espresso Martini

What I’m drinking: Espresso Martini

An espresso martini seems so rich and hard to make but it’s surprisingly fast and easy with only a couple of ingredients! You just need an ounce of espresso or strong coffee, vodka and coffee liquor. Shake it up and voila!

The recipe calls for a half ounce of Kahlua and a half ounce of simple syrup but I just did one ounce of Kahlua and called it good. I also added a cream float to the top because, why not?!

Pattern of the week: Neonpolitan

I love this easy no-think shawl pattern! Neonpolitan gradually grows and you just switch to a new color when one ends which means there’s no leftover yarn at the end. Plus, it adds a fun pop of color to any outfit and it’s light and airy when knit in Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering merino yarn. Just grab your 3 favorite shades and go!

What I’m working on: Ursa Knit-Along

I’m loving knitting the Ursa sweater in Baa Baa Bulky merino yarn. The pattern is really well-written and it’s nice to go on an adventure through another designer’s knitting pattern!

It’s a busy time here at Ewe Ewe Yarns as we prepare for fall. We have new stores coming on board, a fun event at The Twisted Skein in Bakersfield, CA, our big fall yarn shipment will be arriving and I’m dreaming up new patterns for the San Diego Yarn Crawl. Phew!

Yarn shop visit: Alamitos Bay Yarn Company

This week I was on the road and visited Alamitos Bay Yarn Company in Long Beach, CA. This adorable yarn store is situated in a beautiful marina with cool ocean breezes. I was enchanted right as I got out of my car! The staff was friendly and the shop is well-stocked.

I got chatting with some knitters at the workshop table and even went for coffee with one! She and I sat and knitted at the coffee shop for almost an hour. I love that about knitting — we always have something to talk about!

If you’re in the LA area, I’d highly recommend a visit to Alamitos Bay Yarn Company to get a knitting fix.

Easy White Asparagus

Easy White Asparagus

What I’m cooking: Easy White Asparagus

Do you see a seasonal type of produce at the grocery store and wonder what to do with it? I do that all the time and this week I decided to figure out how to cook one!

I took the leap and bought a special bundle of white asparagus. I did a bit of research and decided to cook them with this Easy White Asparagus recipe that adds salt, lemon and butter to the cooking liquid. Since white asparagus has a much more delicate flavor than green asparagus, the addition of those elements lightly seasoned the bundles to a delicious result!

The #BaaBaaUrsa KAL starts this week! I’m really looking forward to making this sweater so I have something fresh and new to wear when the weather starts to change. Heather and Sara at Apricot Yarn

Yarn shop fun: Two LYS visits in one week!

I was lucky enough to hangout at both my local yarn stores this week. On Wednesday I visited Apricot Yarn & Supply in San Diego for their weekly Yarn Enthusiasts Social. My girlfriend and I made a day of it and had a lovely lunch outside after a few hours of knitting at the shop with Sara and her huge table of ladies! Apricot Yarn just had its two year anniversary and to see the community the store has built is inspiring to say the least!

Heather and Lacey at Yarning for You

Heather and Lacey at Yarning for You

Then on Saturday I spent the day at Yarning for You in San Marcos, CA and had a ton of fun celebrating Christmas in July. Lacey and I donned our matching Head to the Sleigh hats (look at those adorable beanies!), watched hours of Hallmark Christmas movies (we watched this one where some cats fall in love and then so do their humans, amazing!), and chatted all things gift knitting. Now is the time to start your holiday knits!

It was so nice to get out of my office and hang out with knitters. Sometimes I get stuck shipping orders or just spend too much time at my desk and I feel full and refreshed after spending time talking all things fiber!

If you’re in the San Diego area for vacation, SD ComicCon or for whatever reason definitely take the time to stop at both of these stores. They each have their own special offering and have tons of great yarn including lots of Ewe Ewe!

Knitting help: How to read yarn labels

My friend Heidi at Hands Occupied has a great article about deciphering the information on a yarn label. Those little wraps of paper have a ton of details you need to know to create a successful finished product like how much yarn is on the ball or what the care instructions are for that yarn. Take a look at this helpful post for the key to decode a ball of yarn!

What I’m cooking: Asian Cucumber Salad

I’m back with another cool and refreshing salad! (I hope you like it, Linda!) I made this Asian Cucumber Salad this week and it was delicious. I served it with a seared chicken breast and it made a lovely summer meal.

I didn’t have any sesame seeds on the day I wanted to make it so I substituted poppy seeds to give a little extra texture. I will get the right sesame seeds though because I know I’ll be making this salad a few more times because it was so good!

Silver Springs tee in Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering merino yarn

Silver Springs tee in Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering merino yarn

What I’m knitting: Silver Springs tee

I talked about the Silver Springs tee on my blog back in April and I couldn’t stop thinking about it so I finally cast it on! This little tee is the perfect gauge for Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering merino yarn. I chose color 53 Forest Fern because I think I’ll get a ton of wear out of it all year long.

In other news, I’ve been thinking about a new KAL! I’m feeling like something fun and fast is just what we need. Stay tuned for Wednesday’s email!

I hope you have had a creative week. Leave me a comment to let me know what you’ve been up to!

Finished Object! Foxtrot Cardigan

As a "yarnie" I was able to start my Foxtrot Cardigan a few weeks ago and I am thrilled with the result! I knit my sweater using Ewe Ewe Yarns Wooly Worsted merino in color Midnight Blue.

This sweater designed by Marie Greene of Olive Knits was a blast to knit. I don’t often get to work from another designer’s pattern and so this was a fun adventure of dancing lace, wavy necklines and a great finished piece!

I chose to make a size close to my actual measurements for a more fitted finished sweater and I love the result. I know I'll be wearing this cardigan for years to come.

Take a look at all my photos on my Ravelry project page.

What I’m cooking: Lemony Orzo Pasta Salad with Cucumber and Feta

Summer is definitely here so cold, fresh salads are the name of the game. I love this combination of crunchy, salty, citrusy goodness. Cucumbers are always a seasonal favorite and add a little starchy orzo to the mix and you have a real winner! This salad whips up in no time and can travel or just be eaten from a big bowl on the couch with the fan pointed right at you.

What’s new: Bounding Blitzen!

I think holiday knits are the most fun and July is a great time to get started on those projects because they’re small and they’ll be done in time to wear for the season!

I just launched the new Bounding Blitzen beanie which is knit using 2 colors of Baa Baa Bulky merino yarn from Ewe Ewe. This quick color work hat will work up before Santa has time to pack his sleigh!

This weekend’s event! To kick off Christmas in July, I’ll be at Yarning for You in San Marcos, CA on Saturday, July 13. We’ll be talking all things holiday knits and screening Hallmark Christmas movies! See the event details.

I hope you have had a creative week. Leave me a comment to let me know what you’ve been up to!
