Hello and good morning! It’s me, Heather, owner of Ewe Ewe Yarns.

Welcome to a new feature on the Ewe Ewe blog about living a creative life and a few things I’ve found that have inspired me lately. I love to knit and crochet but I also enjoy gardening, cooking, photography and a craft cocktail or two. Some of the things you’ll find in these new posts could range from where I’m knitting, what I’m cooking, and maybe some color inspiration.

What I’m cooking: Basic, Bang Up Blue Cheese Dressing

With all the fresh veggies sprouting up that means we’re heading in to salad season. I like to make a batch of this easy blue cheese salad dressing and just pop it in a mason jar in the fridge. It’s great over any salad or as a quick dip with carrots for a quick snack. I’ve even drizzled it over baked salmon as a delightful sauce. Yum!

Where I’m knitting: On the sofa!

Last week it was bright and sunny outside but this week we’ve had some big spring weather happening. I’ve been tucked up on the couch finishing a new sweater design in Ewe Ewe Fluffy Fingering merino yarn. I just have to get those last few ends tucked in and then I’ll show you!

I hope you have had a creative week. Leave me a comment to let me know what you’ve been up to!

Cauliflower risotto recipe

Cauliflower risotto recipe

What I’m cooking: Cauliflower Risotto.

I love real risotto with the thick, rich rice and cream but that’s not always manageable on a week night so I’ve been substituting this cauliflower risotto for a side dish lately. It’s made from riced cauliflower with garlic and bacon and it’s rounded out with some cream and parmesan to make it extra tasty! I’ve been making it about once a week.

I’m loving the fresh spring blossoms that pop up every day. Being in Southern California has led me to become a succulent gardener but I can’t say I mind because these drought tolerant plants are amazing!

Free Pattern Friday: Black Dipped Beanie in Baa Baa Bulky merino yarn

Black Dipped Beanie FREE knitting pattern

Black Dipped Beanie FREE knitting pattern

The Black Dipped Beanie came about when I asked a friend what color she liked. Her answer was, “black with darker shades of black.” Ha. Ok…

So I set about to make a black beanie but I just couldn’t do ALL black so she got a black beanie with a brighter pop of color! You know I love some pops of color.

I think it turned out pretty great and she really loved it so that was good, too.

All in all the Black Dipped Beanie is a quick knit, great for gift-giving and sized for the whole family! You could get 2 balls of Baa Baa Bulky and swap them around to make a couple of hats. I think this hat took me about three hours to knit at a leisurely pace.

Browse through our color selection of Baa Baa Bulky. You can use Black Licorice for the bottom portion of the hat and add your favorite shade (or your friend’s favorite shade) to the top. Or pick the two colors that you love most! You can’t really go wrong.

7 years ago I started Ewe Ewe Yarns with 7 colors of Wooly Worsted and a big dream – I wanted to own my own yarn company and build a business that I loved – and somehow here we are! Thank you for your years of support and emails of encouragement. I've enjoyed growing this business more than I ever thought I would!

I'm excited to continue Ewe Ewe for another 7 years or maybe more. We have a lot in store for you this fall but first let's celebrate!

Cheers to 7 years!

Behind the scenes: The Knit Show with Vickie Howell

This week I got to film my segment on The Knit Show with Vickie Howell. You may remember that Vickie ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to get this new web series into production and now the time was here for all the lights, cameras, and action. It was so fun and amazing!

The show is being filmed in Austin, TX so I got to take my first trip to there and it did not disappoint. I stayed in this crazy little spot called The Highlander Hotel. It's kind of a redone motel with a fresh coat of wild paint on it but the beds were clean, staff was nice, and they have these adorable hot pink sheep all over the hotel!

hahaha. How could hot pink sheep not make any hotel a thousand times better?

The Knit Show was filmed in this really awesome restored auto mechanic shop. It was a huge building that has been made amazing with exposed beams and reclaimed wood from old schools. As a guest on the show I got to hang out in the green room which was full of snacks, gift bags, and the show's makeup artists and all of her goodies. Hello!

I got to relax for a while, have some coffee, and a breakfast burrito – an Austin staple! – then it was time to shoot my segment. I am part of Episode 10 which is all about holiday knitting and gifting. The project I designed for the show is an awesome concept that will make you go, WOW! Hint: It uses the same number of stitches but you can make something fun for you to wear or change the yarn and the needle size and make something for your home. Any ideas? Leave a comment below!

The crew set up my yarns and projects in such a cute way. They have cameras set from three or four different angles including one overhead! You'll be able to follow along as I demonstrate how to make the project so you can make it yourself. Hello, tutorial!

Here's the crew getting all the lights and rigging set just right. They were great.

Here's a wider shot of the set. Vickie was all set and ready to film the exit clip for Episode 10. I stayed around so I could watch. It's not every day you get to be on a film set, you know?

And that was it! My segment went by so fast but I think it will be great. I can't wait to show it to you!

Here I am with Vickie and some of the crew. We had to stop to take a photo of the ginger brigade. Redheads for life.

The Knit Show with Vickie Howell drops all in one binge-watching-extravaganza on YouTube October 5th. Go to theknitshow.com to subscribe!
